Godfrey Machinjili was one of the most talented of Zimbabwe’s ‘second generation’ of sculptures. His first contact with the craft of sculpture was made as an assistant to his brother Garison, but he soon beat out his own artistic path. The principal subjects of his sculptures are drawn from the world of plants and animals, which he depicts in idealized forms. His highly abstract depictions direct the viewer’s gaze towards nature’s details. In a manner analogous to the photographer Karl Blossfeldt, the artist uses hammer and chisel to bring a detail into focus, three-dimensionally revealing the beauty of a plant or an animal.
