Munya Victor Madzima is among the Zimbabwean artists who adopted an idiosyncratic artistic position from the very beginning. Never content to work within the traditionalist mould of Shona sculpture, he has always preferred subject matter that would generate friction. Having won the Zimbabwe Heritage competition, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto, from 1991 to 1994. On his return to Zimbabwe, he worked mainly as a sculptor in stone, based in Harare. He left the country again in 2005 to escape worsening political repression and gained recognition as a multi-media artist in Canada. More recently, he has made a name for himself in England as the “King of Spoon” and founded an independent art school offering multi-disciplinary training for sculptors and performance artists.
