Continued from "The Origin of the Collection..."
Eventually I came in contact with numerous East African painters and sculptors. In 1991, I stayed for some time at the artists’ community Tengenenge in Zimbabwe. There I witnessed the passionate creation of wondrous pieces of sculpture by the Shona artists. With increasing appreciation for young African art, I began my collection of works of art from Kenya, Uganda, and Benin, as well as Zimbabwe.
Several years later, with other “friends of Africa,” we founded the gallery Kunst Transit Berlin, organizing exhibitions of contemporary African art.
The Goal of Kunst Transit Berlin
African art is often underestimated by the Western world. It is our goal to advance an interest in the highly diverse art and culture of the African continent. In addition, we hope to counteract fashionable trends in the art world. Through unique contributions by art experts and interested art lovers, we aim to overcome rigid perceptions of contemporary African art. Each individual creation should again be an object of contemplation.
