In late 1987, he had established his name as an important new talent in the Zimbabwean art scene
Joined the Chapungu Sculpture Village as a resident artist from 1987 until 1991 and returning again in 1999-2000
Garison Machinjili began work in 1986 as an assistant to his cousin, Tapfuma Gutsa. Today, he enjoys a reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s foremost sculptors and has participated in exhibitions at national and international levels. Machinjili’s work is distinctive for his exclusive treatment of the stone. He mostly works in Serpentinite, which unfolds a string plastic effect when polished. Damaged human existence is his subject. His torsos, both male and female, still convey the bodies’ natural beauty, their force and their erotic magnetism. But the artist expressed their lost wholeness by marking polished surfaces with traces of eruption and by giving rough finishes to complete body parts.
