lived and worked as a sculptor mainly in Nyanga, Zimbabwe

died 1989

After participating in the exhibition "Arte de Vukutu" shown in 1971 at the Museé National Moderne John's international reputation was made

Solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including Royal Festival Hall, London, Museé Rodin, Paris, ICA Gallery, London, Feingarten Gallery, Los Angeles, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK

Became first member of the Workshop School at what is now the National Gallery of Zimbabwe; from 1963 his work was exhibited there.

Was in the 70ies one of the most important and influential figures of Vukutu, a sculptural farm near Nyanga.

His work "Hornbill Man" was depicted on a Zimbabwean stamp issued to commemorate Commonwealth Day on 14^th of March 1983

Artist Profil

John Takawira first came into contact with the craft of sculpture through his uncle Joram Mariga, who is considered the originator of Shona sculpture. Frank McEwen, director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (at the time still known as Southern Rhodesia) soon recognized his talent and, in 1962, took him on as one of the first students in his Workshop School. When McEwen founded  a sculptors’ colony at Vukutu, John Takawira followed him there to become one of Zimbabwe’s most influential artists. Today, he is considered a classic of Shona art. John Takawira’s sculptures reveal thoughts and feelings of considerable intensity. Although he never neglects to reveal his material’s natural language, one can detect a strong spiritual intention guiding him. His sculptures often seem like archaeological finds, containing a timeless, universal significance.
